Local NGO, Island Development Environmental Awareness Society (IDEAS) is collaborating with a UK based NGO, Olive Ridley Project (ORP) to conduct research inĀ  Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal region to accurately interpret sea turtle population and movements in the Maldives.

The project called the “Sea Turtle Expedition” is carried out with the mission to monitor and gather data from an area which is described as a “black hole” by scientists as there is a lack of data from the region.

ORP was founded back in 2013 with the mission to protect sea turtles in the Indian Ocean through research, education, rehabilitation and by promoting the reuse of end of life fishing gear, The organization has a fully functional rehabilitation center with a full time vet and boasts one of the largest sea-turtle photo-ID databases in the world, which consists of 11,000 sightings of 2,000 identified individual turtles.

The local partner for this expedition, IDEAS is based from Haa Alif. Kelaa. The NGO which operates with the mission to promote socio-economic development of the community as well as to promote sustainable island development.
