Following COVID-19’s lockdown, one of the things that kept people busy, were building recreational grounds and places to unwind; usually at beach.
H.Dh. Nolhivaranfaru youth too joined this unofficial movement to build safe spaces to wind down, and have succeeded in building a place with their creativity, blood, sweat and tears.
“After the government imposed the nationwide lockdown and closed borders, the resort I was working closed down as well. There were many who came back from resorts, and all of us, along with youth who were already here, decided to develop the beach area into a space where people can relax and let loose. That’s how we began work,” stated Mohamed Ahmed, a young man who belonged to the group.
According to Mohamed, they first built a swing on the beachside area. A table soon followed and with time chairs were built from scratch too.
The small recreational area that the boys built were evidence to their able skill set and creativity. Even though the woodwork must have taken days, the finishing was exceptional and admirable.
Every stand, every piece of furniture placed in the area were well thought of and finished to perfection. The beach area was furbished with chairs, stands, tables, swings and a set of other fittings, made with love for people of all ages.
“Personally, I find the chair made out of a tree’s (Midhili gas) roots most finest, among all the fixtures we have made”, said Mohamed.
Mohamed also stated, his team is content knowing the locals are enjoying the products of their hard work. Despite the situation being financially constraining, the group of men built and created a place for the islanders to relax and enjoy.
It took over a month for the small team of enthusiasts to finish, what they regarded as their social project. Work began around 9 in the morning and with the occasional prayer breaks, they stop for the day with the sunset.
“We have completed our work on the beach area. Anyone can come, sit and enjoy the fresh breeze at any time of the day. A lot of people frequent the island for picnics and other recreational purposes, so we hope even they can find some peace by sitting here. Our only request is for everyone to keep the place clean and avoid property damage,” added Mohamed.

The team was careful not to harm the environment while developing the area, paying extra attention to using environment-friendly tactics. After they were thorough cleaning the palm tree jungle that surrounded the beach, the immaculate area looked the quintessential space to mellow out.
Mohamed and his team offers their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who assisted and facilitated their work. They believe the secret to their accomplishment was team work and unity.
