President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the Hdh. As of 1 January 2020 Kulhudhuffushi will be designated as a city.

With the change, Kulhudhuffushi will become the fourth city of Maldives and the first northern city of the archipelago.

A council will be recognized as a city according to the Decentralization Act if the number of voters in the council’s jurisdiction reaches 10,000. In November 2018 the population of Kulhudhuffushi reached 10,000.

Latest changes to the Decentralization Act stipulate that a seven-member city council must be elected to cities with a population of 10,000-30,000. This includes the town’s mayor, elected by all residents registered on the island, and six councilors from six parts of the town.
