Ministry further stated that as per the fisheries rules and regulations, only parties authorized by the fisheries ministry are permitted to deploy FADs in the Maldives. The use of FADs is regulated, to avoid the negative consequences of their misuse, such as damage to the local and global marine ecosystem. Unauthorized parties caught utilizing or modifying any of FADs will face penalties.

Moreover, if these standards are not maintained by locals, the county’s economy may suffer as a result of a terrible reputation in overseas markets.

Currently, 56 FADs are installed across the country, which are designated for pole and line fishing. Moreover, fisheries law also prohibits the use of FADs that are anchored to boats, as well as fishing within three miles of them.
