Painting and artistry is a common talent mastered by many Maldivians across the country. Some hone their flair for art for fun while others do it to earn something out of it. Despite a few people who believe painting cannot earn a decent salary, there are more open-minded individuals who are committed to their passion and make do with what they get. Maldives is slowly leaving behind the reactionary beliefs and embracing progressive thinking that are uplifting artists of all kinds.

While artists are celebrated on social media platforms, the debate whether there is occupational scope to it is still ongoing.

“It’s true, isn’t it? A lot of people still don’t believe a future can be built on art. I beg to differ, though. I think there’s lots of scope in this field and people shouldn’t really downgrade it”, stated Ibrahim Shihab (Sibbe), who is an aspiring artist working at Hideaway Resort as a Souvenir Shop Artist.

Born to H.Dh Nellaidhoo, Sibbe is an artist achieving great feats in his field with a message to those who aspire to walk on the same path. While explaining how he got into art and drawing, Sibbe said that every single person is born with a special talent and it is up to them to identify this talent and hone it to perfection.

Sibbe began to take an interest in art during his school days. He used to draw using pencils as a beginner and after creating a wonderful drawing of former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom, he decided he has the talent to pursue a career out of this.

Even before starting a job, Sibbe used to send his paintings to souvenir shops in Male’. He mainly draws scenic paintings that convey the beauty of Maldives. Even though Sibbe prefers to paint by hand, he knows the ropes of screen painting well.

“I get online commissions a lot. People randomly send pictures and ask me to draw them. Most requests come from locals and depending on availability of time, I draw them accordingly,”

Sibbe stated, emphasising local demand for his work.

Sibbe also added that he loves teaching youngsters and enjoys passing his knowledge to those interested.

His aim is to reach the same level as renowned artists in the country. He is currently working to improve his techniques and refine his art further. Sibbe also believes that the government could do a better role in helping those passionate about pursuing a career in art by giving them opportunities to interact and learn from local experts in art.

Sibbe believes that he was able to come this far with the help of many people. His family and friends have supported him throughout his journey and always endorsed his work whenever there is a chance. Sibbe fondly noted the help he received from Siruhaan (Siriarts), Shavin, and Ali Hafeez, thanking them from the bottom of his heart.

Sibbe showcases his work in his Instagram account, Artsibbe, and welcomes commissions. If anyone wishes to get a drawing or painting by him, they can directly message him on his page.
