Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has awarded Road Development Corporation (RDC) with the task of constructing the roads at Velana International Airport (VIA).
In a ceremony held on last Saturday, on behalf of MACL, the agreement for the project was signed by CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed and Managing Director of RDC Ali Zuhair signed the agreement on behalf of RDC.
As per the agreement, the RDC will carry out repair and resurfacing of roads at the airport. The agreement also seeks to ensure that roads are maintained regularly, including repairing potholes and repairing buildings, as well as maintaining line marking on the roads.
Moreover, under the agreement, the RDC will clean up the drainage systems and related infrastructures and clean public spaces, pavements and other designated locations of the airport as per the requirements of MACL, and also removing waste from designated areas.
Furthermore, MACL’s Managing Director Shareef stated that even though company has an internal team dedicated to road construction and repair works, in case of an emergency work, it has to be done only after stopping their regular work, company faces consequences. He added that this was the first time the company had signed up with a local company to undertake such a task.
Speaking on the occasion, RDC Managing Director Zuhair stated that by handing over such works to local companies, they can work at par with foreign companies or even better. In addition he stated that he believed that RDC could also be made as strong as MACL and is working towards it.
