HDh. Neykurendhoo Council has successfully completed the program held to teach school children how to play badminton.
A total of 70 students participated in the program, which was conducted for students from grade four to upper grades of the island school.
The program was conducted from December 15 to 20. Speaking about the program, Assistant Council Executive of Neykurendhoo Council, Ali Niyaz stated that Badminton is now a growing sport in the island and many people are now interested in the sport.
Pointing out that the island hosts badminton tournaments every year, Ali Niyaz stated the biggest challenge is the lack of an indoor court to play badminton. In this regard he stated that during the tournaments held at the island previously, tournament was affected by strong winds during the tournament, and the wind caused difficulties even during the program held for students, he added.
In addition, pointing out that development of an indoor badminton court in the island has been included in in this year’s budget, he stated that he hope it will be completed in the near future.
