Ha. Uligamu Council has scheduled and preparations had begun to held the ‘The Great Maldivian Barbecue 2024’ on January 2, 2024.
The movement, which started several years ago in Uligamu, has now become a brand of the island. Unlike in the past, the event is being carried out with the participation of all the residents at the expense of the council.
According to the Uligamu Council, the event is scheduled for January 2 and the steering committee has been formed and preparations are underway. In this regard, it has been decided to collect wood required for the barbecue on December 23. Similar to previous years, this year’s barbecue will be held in the island’s harbour area.
Uligamu has a population of more than five hundred and it has been decided to barbecue around 700 fish in the event. Since it is a school holiday, people who reside in other parts of the country will return to the island for holiday and people from other islands will also visit the island for the event. Also, Migrant labourers living in the island are also participating in the event. It has been decided that fish will be barbecued this year as much as required by all of them.
Moreover to organize the barbecue event successfully various tasks will be divided into groups among the public to carry out the fishing and other arrangements for barbecue.
The purpose of the fishing event is to revive the traditional culture as well as to strengthen relations between the people of the island’s. The barbeque event being held in Uligamu is the largest barbeque event being held in the Maldives.
