HDh. Makunudhoo Council has banned people from entering the land reclaimed area to set up an airport in the island.
According to the order issued by the council on Thursday, council stated that they had been receiving complaints that some people are encroaching on the land reclaimed area, under-construction sandband and the under-construction geoband for the airport development.
Moreover, the council also stated that they had noticed that some people are entering the areas that have been closed for the work. Therefore, the council banned residents from entering the land reclaimed area for the construction of the airport.
The land reclamation project for the Makunudhoo Airport began on August 24. A total of 43.12 hectares of land will be reclaimed for the development of the Airport in Makunudhoo and a 3,493 metre revetment will be constructed to protect the reclaimed area. A 1,500 metre runway will be developed at Makunudhoo.
At a ceremony held at the Planning Ministry, the Government handed over the project to Big Fish Maldives Private Limited on June 23, 2023. The USD 16 million project was awarded to the company to be completed in 550 days.
