Coconut Trees has been planted in HDh. Nolhivaram under “New Generation of Coconut Trees” initiative.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, under the government’s ‘National Coconut Rehabilitation Program’ the “New Generation of Coconut Trees” initiative was commenced by Agriculture Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan on May 5, in HDh. Vaikaradhoo. As part of the program, previously coconut trees were planted in Ha. Utheemu, Ha. Hoarafushi and HDh. Neykurendhoo. Even in Nolhivaram initiative was commenced by Agriculture Minister.
Furthermore, the project is supported by the Maldives Green Fund and brought 5,000 dwarf coconut trees which can produce coconuts within three or four years. Ministry stated that the trees have been kept at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre and quarantined to ensure that they are asymptomatic.
In addition, Ministry noted that other councils who need coconut trees can also approach the Agriculture Ministry with the size and area of the land available for planting trees in the island’s land use plan, and the Ministry will provide trees to other islands as well depending on availability.
