PPM/PNC’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has affirmed that during his tenure, a dedicated minister will oversee Local Government Authorities (LGA) to enhance the autonomy and fortify their capabilities.

This statement was made by Dr. Muizzu while speaking at the “Ask Muizzu” program held by Sangu TV and Channel-13.

When asked by a local about creating a separate ministry for councils, with the eradication of the Atoll ministry established during Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s time, Dr. Muizzu said he won’t be making an atolls ministry. He added that he feels that idea is outdated.

Dr. Muizzu emphasized his experience in both decentralized roles. He pointed out that he received his cabinet position through a decentralized process. As a mayor, he witnessed citizens facing challenges because of inadequate communication between the government and the council.

“I have no intention of establishing an Atoll’s Ministry. It is a rather antiquated system. I express this with genuine concern. I am an individual who has operated within the decentralized system from various perspectives. Presently, I hold a position for which I was elected under a decentralized framework. It is evident to me that the inadequate rapport between the government and the councils leads to the postponement, delay, and neglect of essential matters, which proves inconvenient for the citizens.”

Furthermore, Dr. Muizzu pointed out that the (LGA) are presently not receiving the level of support they should. He noted that an appointed minister oversees LGA by law, leading to a broad mandate. He also explained that because LGA operations are dictated by this mandate, not all councils receive the necessary attention they require.
He further expressed his intention to have a dedicated minister solely responsible for overseeing LGA on a full-time basis.

Dr. Muizzu’s statement has caused misinformation and rumors about the potential creation of an Atolls Ministry under his leadership. He stated that this is not the case, and he has no plans involving an Atolls ministry.

Dr. Muizzu emphasized the necessity of appointing a distinct minister to effectively manage the decentralized system within LGA.
