Foundation stone has been laid for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Northern Area Command’s new headquarters to be constructed in HDh. Hanimaadhoo.
Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi presided over the ceremony while the foundation stone of the building was laid by Minster Mariya and Chief of Defence Force, Lt Gen Abdulla Shamaal.
Speaking on the occasion, Mariya stated that if we look at the geography of the Maldives, the geography of the region and the maritime trade routes in the Indian Ocean, the establishment of a full presence of the Army in the northern part of the country clearly shows the country’s commitment to ensure the safety and security of maritime traffic crossing the region.
Moreover, she also stated that operational commands, centers and outposts of MNDF are being established and arranged keeping in mind the geography of the country, the environment and the population of the islands. It was decided to shift the MNDF Northern Area Command Headquarters to Hanimaadhoo, where the country’s area was designated to establish area commands 15 years back.
The foundation stone laying ceremony of the new headquarters of MNDF Northern Area Command was attended by Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Dhidhdhoo MP Ibrahim Waheed, General Officers of MNDF, Commander of MNDF Northern Area Command Colonel Mohamed Saleem, Senior Officers and President of Hanimaadhoo Council Abdul Sattar Hassan.
It will be the largest army base to be set up in the north at a cost of MVR 35 million from the government budget.
