A cargo vessel carrying cargo to HDh. Hirimaradhoo ran aground Hirimaradhoo Harbour Channel yesterday.
According to MNDF, a vessel named ‘Horizia 3’ carrying goods to Hirimaradhoo from Male’ City ran aground Hirimaradhoo Harbour Channel, and MNDF Northern Area Coast Guard First Squadron started provided assistance as the vessel started sinking as it ran aground Hirimaradhoo right side of Hirimaradhoo Harbour Channel.
A person speaking from Hirimaradhoo stated that the vessel had reached the island this morning and was loaded with stones and sand used for construction.
It is not known if anyone on board the vessel was injured in the incident, he noted, adding that the some of the cargo was unloaded to the side of channel entrance as soon as it ran aground. However, some of them cannot be used as they were too damaged.
Moreover, Hirimaradhoo Council stated that reason caused the incident is due to inadequate depth in harbour channel basin and they have brought the issue to the attention of the government and it had been shared it with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but they had not responded to it.
According to the council, the 98 feet long vessel had fractured a portion of its main body during the incident.
