The Badminton Court in Sh. Foakaidhoo has been installed with mat and upgraded.

It is a badminton court developed by the council at the Community Centre set up in the island with the help of the Government of India.

According to Foakaidhoo Council President Ahmed Asif nearly MVR 2 lakh have been spent on upgrading the badminton court. The idea behind doing such a thing is to promote the sport in the islands and atolls and produce talented players.

Moreover, he stated that after the upgrading the court, a basic badminton program was also conducted in which 40 people were trained. About 40 per cent of them are women, he noted. The program was organized jointly by the council and the Foakaidhoo Police Station, and was taught by trained people in the field.

Expressing hope that the program will continue and national-level badminton players will also be produced from the island, Asif stated that in order to achieve this, training programs have been planned for students from the school as well.

Furthermore, he stated the work would begin once the multi-purpose hall of the island school is completed. Asif stated three badminton courts can be used from the school’s multi-purpose hall and hence they are already in talks with the school.
