A 1,000 tree plantation program has begun in HDh. Hanimaadhoo.

The program was inaugurated yesterday morning by Council President Abdul Sattar Hassan. Government Institutes in the island, schools and a residents of the island were present on the occasion. According to Council Executive Ibrahim Ali the target is to plant 1,000 trees in a year.

Moreover, Ibrahim Ali stated that a large number of trees have been cut down and relocated as part of the airport in the island and hence there has been a reduction in trees on the roads as well. He also noted that even though initiative is to plant 1,000 trees, they will try to do more than that.

Under the program, fruit trees, flower trees and shade trees will also be planted. In particular, two varieties of trees, ‘Kandu’ and ‘Uni Trees’, which are on verge of extinction in the island will be planted in large numbers, according to Ibrahim Ali.

In addition, a cleaning program also was held yesterday evening.
