Coconut Trees has been planted in Ha. Utheemu and Ha. Hoarafushi under “New Generation of Coconut Trees” initiative.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, under the government’s ‘National Coconut Rehabilitation Program’ the “New Generation of Coconut Trees” initiative was commenced by Agriculture Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan on May 5, in HDh. Vaikaradhoo.
As part of the program coconut trees were planted in Utheemu on the Morning of May 7, and in Hoarafushi at evening on the same day. Moreover, the council members, Women’s Development Committee (WDC), Youths, students from School, Farmers, and staffs from institutions at the island were present at the inauguration ceremony in both islands.
Furthermore, the project is supported by the Maldives Green Fund and brought 5,000 dwarf coconut trees which can produce coconuts within three or four years. Ministry stated that the trees have been kept at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre and quarantined to ensure that they are asymptomatic.
In addition, Ministry noted that other councils who need palm trees can also approach the Agriculture Ministry with the size and area of the land available for planting trees in the island’s land use plan, and the Ministry will provide trees to other islands as well depending on availability.
