The initiative “New Generation of Coconut Trees” to restore healthy coconut trees in the Maldives has begun in HDh. Vaikaradhoo.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, under the government’s ‘National Coconut Rehabilitation Program’. Coconut Trees were planted in Vaikaradhoo yesterday.
The initiative was started by Agriculture Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan. Moreover, the project is supported by the Maldives Green Fund and brought 5,000 dwarf coconut trees which can produce coconuts within three or four years.
Ministry stated that the trees have been kept at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre and quarantined to ensure that they are asymptomatic. Furthermore, a team from the Ministry of Agriculture currently on visit to Thiladhunmathi is also scheduled to visit HDh. Neykurendhoo, Ha. Utheemu and Ha. Hoarafushi and planting palm trees in these islands.
In addition, Ministry noted that other council’s who need palm trees can also approach the Agriculture Ministry with the size and area of the land available for planting trees in the island’s land use plan, and the Ministry will provide trees to other islands as well depending on availability.
