To mark World Wetlands Day, a clean-up event was held in Sh. Feydhoo Lake and Wetland area.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the second day of February every year. The theme for this year’s day is ‘kulhi, faa, chasbin iyaadha kuran vee vaguthu’ (i.e. time to revive lakes (ponds) and wetlands).
Feydhoo Council and Rotary Club of Male’ jointly carried out a clean-up event to mark the day. Also, Institutions, clubs, organizations and residents of Feydhoo participated in the event. As part of the event held on February 4, 2023, 245 kg of garbage including plastic and non-perishable waste was collected and disposed of from the area that includes lake and wetland in Feydhoo.
The Rotary Club of Male’ was registered ten years ago. It is one of its objectives to organize and implement various environmental protection program. According to the President of Rotary Club Shahida, event held in collaboration with Feydhoo council to mark World Wetlands Day was a very successful event.
Shahida further stated that the event, which was also attended by members of the Rotary Club of Male’ checked the weight of waste collected at the event, so they can understand how much waste are dumped on them from the people living in the community and they can promote awareness referring to those statistics.
In the last 50 years, 35% of the world’s natural Wetlands (including lakes, ponds) have disappeared.
