Sh. Noomara Council has started waste collection service from households in the island.

The service was started on January 7, 2023. Speaking regarding the service, Ali Rabeeu, president of the Noomara council stated that there is no proper quality waste collection center in the island. Though the government has been carrying out the work to develop a proper waste collection center and it will take time to develop such a waste collection center, so all kinds of waste are being dumped together and the process of safe waste management is not taking place.

Therefore, the council decided to make it possible to manage the temporary waste collection service and started the work using the existing pickup in the island. He also added that the waste collection center is currently divided with tin for waste segregation.

Moreover, Rabeeu stated that an additional 1,500-kg pickup will be brought soon to carry out the service. Also he added that first two of months are trial and no fee will be charged from the people in the first two months. After that, the price will be decided.

In addition, he highlighted that the Environment Ministry has also decided to provide a lorry for waste collection and the vehicle will be available before the waste collection center is developed.
