The Ministry of Fisheries Marine Resources and Agriculture has started a basic farming program in Sh. Feydhoo in collaboration with Feydhoo Council under the ministry’s Maldives Agribusiness Program.
The purpose of the program are to increase the love for farming among the people of the island, promote farming and provide people of the island with relevant knowledge regarding farming.
A total of 21 participants participated in the program, which will be held from November 18-24, 2022. The program will provide information on how to prepare soil/land, sowing, manuring, irrigation, weeding, harvesting, how to protect the pants from diseases and various agriculture-related information.
According to the President of Feydhoo Council Ahmed Raisham, there are several people in the island who loves farming and they are already cultivating different plants on vacant land in their own homes. However, Raisham noted that there are no designated farming land in the island as the land use plan has not been completed together, but now it has reached the final stage of completion of the land use plan. Once the land use plan is completed, farmers in the island will be allotted land for farming.
Moreover, the idea of the Council is to expand agriculture in the island and take it to greater heights. Council noted that four agriculture-related programs has been carried out previously in the island. In addition Raisham expressed hope that the second part of this program would be carried out without much delay.
