Vice President Faisal Naseem returned to Male’ after concluding his trip to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).

The vice president made a statement on behalf of the Maldives and urged international cooperation in the face of climate change during the COP27 opening ceremony. Despite m Maldives’ negligible contributions to the causes of climate change, it would be impossible for Maldivians to respond effectively to them without global support.

During this trip, the Vice President had meetings with high-ranking representatives and foreign leaders. Speaking at the high-level discussion on “Innovative Finance for Climate and Development” as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, he also urged the developed world to acknowledge and accept its contributions to climate change (COP27). Moreover, he addressed at the high-level forum on “Climate Change and Sustainability of Vulnerable Communities”.

The Vice President also gave a keynote at the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and Vulnerable Group of 20 (V20) event held on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).

Furthermore, during the visit, the Vice President met with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Professor Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb. The Grand Imam gave the Vice President his assurance that he would provide the Maldives with more short-term training, scholarship opportunities, and teachers.

In addition, he also met with the Maldivian student population at Al-Azhar University. The Vice President was accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials.
