Ibrahim Shahid (Vaikaradhoo Shaad), Saamiyaage (10197), Hulhumale’, has received the National Award of Recognition for his excellent and continued efforts in promoting tourism.

The awards were presented by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at an official ceremony held at Dharubaaruge last night to present this year’s National Awards.

This year’s National Award of Honor was presented to 10 recipients, and the National Award of Recognition to 22 recipients in a special ceremony at Dharubaaruge last night.

The recipients of the National Award of Honor received commemorative shields and badges, while recipients of the National Award of Recognition received commemorative plaques from the President.

Ibrahim Shahid, who started to work at a young age, worked bravely, stood on his own feet and stood firm. Shahid first started his career as an airport representative with Destination Maldives Private Limited in 1996.

Ibrahim Shahid learned to write and speak fluently in English, Japanese and Italian in order to make his dream of building his own business in tourism and benefiting the country from it, in to a reality. In 2000, he completed his Scuba Dive Master to ensure that perfect services are provided to tourists. Now, Shahid is a PADI Scuba Dive Instructor and a boat captain of ‘Class 5 Category’.

Shahid purchased the ship Blue Marine 1, and formed his own company Blue K Safari Maldives Private Limited on November 5, 2000. This is the 26th year Shahid has been working in the tourism sector without interruption and now he owns three private Safari Boats, three Dive Vessels and a Guesthouse is  currently under operation.

Apart from being the managing director and CEO of his company, Shahid also participates in other national events in the tourism sector. He played an important role in creating the Liveaboard Association (LAM), which was formed in 2007 to promote the boating industry, and now known as the National Boating Association (NBAM). He was vice-president of NBAM from 2013 to 2015 and president of NBAM from 2017 to 2019. He was also a member of the Business Council set up by the Ministry of Economic Development from 2017 to 2019. Ibrahim Shahid has been representing the Maldives Boating Association since 2013 on the Baa Atoll Biosphere Advisory Board and the Baa Atoll Conservation Fund Board.

Among Shahid’s achievements in the field of tourism, ‘Soleil Safari’, operated by the company run by Shahid, was awarded the Visitor’s Choice Liveaboard of the year in 2007. In 2014, 2016 and 2018, Dolphin Safari received the ‘Best Fishing Liveaboard of the Year’. In addition, Blue K Safari Maldives Private Limited has received the ‘Best Liveaboard or Yacht Operator of the Year’ at the Maldives Boating Awards 2019. It should be noted that Soleil 2 Safari has received the ‘Excellence in Hospitality’ award at the Maldives Business Awards 2019. It is also important to note that Ibrahim Shahid was the first recipient of the Boating Personality of Maldives Liveaboard Industry Award in 2014.

The recipients for National Awards were vetted and selected by the National Awards Committee.

The National Awards are conferred annually to recognise and encourage the efforts of individuals and organisations that contribute to the nation’s development and society’s benefit.
