“Mila Uthuru Handball Tournament” organized by the Shaviyani Atoll Council has commenced.

According to the atoll council, total 10 teams from the atoll participated the tournament aimed at women from the atoll, which began on September 21, 2022.

Moreover, teams are divided into two groups, and the matches will be played in three islands of Shaviyani Atoll. They are Feydhoo, Narudhoo and Lhaimagu. Shaviyani Atoll Council stated that the islands were selected based on travel and other means.

Each team participating in the competition will receive an allowance of MVR 3,000 while the winning team will be awarded MVR 35,000. The runner-up team will receive a cash prize of MVR 15,000.

Furthermore, atoll council noted that security of the tournament, preparation of the field and referees for the tournament is arranged by the Police. And the tournament is held with the assistance of the Ministry of Tourism to mark the 50th anniversary of the Maldivian tourism industry. The main sponsor of the competition is also the Tourism Ministry.

In addition, back in June this year, Shaviyani Atoll Council conducted a handball coaching course in Funadhoo, the capital of Shaviyani Atoll.  The course was conducted in collaboration with Shaviyani Atoll Council, Handball Maldives and Maldives Institute of Sports. While 24 participants from 11 islands of the atoll completed the course, 20 participants received certificates.
