The powerhouse operated by citizens of Sh. Funadhoo has been handed over to Fenaka Corporation to operate and provide electricity services in Funadhoo.

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna attended the special ceremony held in Funadhoo to handover the powerhouse to Fenaka. Also citizens of the island attended the ceremony.

Fenaka stated that the powerhouse run by the people of Funadhoo for 36 years was handed over to Fenaka since the people of Funadhoo gained the trust from the modern sustainable services provided by Fenaka in the islands. Moreover, company has commenced the transformation of Funadhoo electricity services, like all other islands in Shaviyani Atoll. Currently two generators of 600kW and 800kW are delivered to Funadhoo and installation of these two Generators are underway.

Funadhoo Council President Ahmed Ibrahim Fulhu recently stated tha the powerhouse was operating at a loss of MVR 700,000 per month over the past four months. This is the first time the powerhouse has been operating at a loss since 2011. Moreover, a decision was made to save the financial losses even though the majority of the people want to run it as a people’s powerhouse.

The powerhouse has been operated by the people of Funadhoo since 1983.
