The government has announced plans to seek contractors to develop airports in six islands of the Maldives.
These islands are HDh. Makunudhoo, Sh. Bilehfahi, B. Thulhaadhoo, Th. Vilufushi, F. Magoodhoo and two islands south of Raa Atoll which have yet not been decided.
The development of airports in some islands has been announced twice in the past. The first announcement to seek a party to build airports in Makunudhoo and Bilehfahi was made on January 29, 2021. The deadline was later extended on February 13, 2021.
According to the Planning Ministry, the development of domestic airports in six islands was reopened following a change in the regulation stipulating the lease of islands or land or lagoons for tourism purposes as cross subsidies. Moreover, according to the Ministry, a minimum USD 3 million should be invested in the project.
In addition, the Ministry stated that the proposals submitted by the applicants for the previous announcement will not be cancelled and they will not be required to resubmit their proposals.
