STO to charge for shopping bags as a measures to reduce the use of plastic

State Trading Organization (STO) People’s Choice has decided to charge for the shopping bags as a measure to reduce the use of plastic.

According to a tweet by STO People’s Choice, they recommend customers to bring a Tote Bag, when going for shopping.  And also urged the public to take environmentally friendly measures to reduce the use of plastic bags.

Plastic bags and paper bags have now been provided free of charge from the shop. However, it has now been decided to charge MVR 2.5 per plastic bag and MVR 2 per paper bag from July 17, 2022, onwards.

In addition, various state-owned companies are working to increase environmentally friendly practices. In this regard, STO has also significantly reduced the number of paper used in its offices.
