Maamakunudhoo Atoll has begun to receive global attention with its large Manta Ray population.
According to the results of a one month survey in March by the Manta Trust in HDh. Makunudhoo, more than 100 new Manta has been added to Maldivian Manta registry.

The international organization Manta Trust revealed that the Maldives has the highest number of Manta population in the world.
Moreover, speaking to the survey team, Makunudhoo Council President Auzam Adam stated that a large population of 45-50 Manta’s has been spotted from one point of the lagoon of Makunudhoo.
Furthermore, Manta Trust stated they will work with the people of Makunudhoo to protect the population of Manta’a. They have also conducted various awareness activities in Makunudhoo.
The reputation gained with the vast population of Mantas is believed to be another opportunity to expand local tourism in Makunudhoo.
