Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has requested its customers to divide wastes generated at the households in to categories before disposal.

According to a statement by WAMCO the decision was made following an amendment to the Waste Management Regulations issued by the Environment Ministry on August 17, 2021. Therefore, from next month onwards WAMCO will be collecting waste as per the new amendment.

The company stated that households in the Greater Male’ Region will be required to categorize waste to three categories. They are a general waste generated at households, plastic bottle, and other waste. Moreover, waste generated in other inhabited islands, industrial islands and resorts should be further categorized separately. They are Glass and Metal wastes.

WAMCO has also requested for call and pickup (CAPS) services to collect large and heavy waste that is not included in the general waste category.

In addition, WAMCO stated company have the right to not to collect waste from households if waste is not categorized. And company requests. He also requested to divide the waste brought to Thilafushi waste disposal site also in to four categories.
