State Trading Organization (STO) has begun using energy efficient stickers “Hakathari” on electronics imported to the Maldives by the company.
The program to use energy labels in STO products was launched by Environment Minister Aminath Shauna and Managing Director and CEO of STO Hussain Amru at a special ceremony held at the STO People’s Choice Supermart.
The “Hakathari” program was initiated by the Environment Ministry with the aim of ensuring that Electronic Equipment’s imported to the Maldives meet a certain level of standards and determine the energy efficiency of electricity supplies. Therefore, from the energy meters on the label will know the efficient amount of the object.
According to STO at the beginning stickers will be used on three products, they are ACs, Fridge, and Washing Machines. Moreover, speaking at today’s ceremony, Minister Shauna urged those who import Electronic Equipment’s to the Maldives to participate in the energy program.
The energy program was formulated with the assistance of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Under the “Strengthening Low Carbon Energy Island Strategies” project run by the Environment Ministry in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment).
