Haa Alifu Atoll Council has approved the atoll development plan for the next five years by including the Transshipment Harbour Construction plan.

According to the development plan prepared by the Atoll Council for the next five years, the atoll’s economy will be carried out in a sustainable manner by establishing a Transshipment Port in the atoll.

Moreover, due to the geographical location of Haa Alif Atoll, and Ihavandhippolhu in the atoll is one of the main routes for vessels to travel from the east of the world to the west of the world. Therefore, the Economic Ministry has stated that Haa Alif Atoll is the best area for the construction of the port in the Maldives, and the port can compete with other international ports in the region.

Furthermore, according to the Economic Ministry, the project will benefit the Maldivian economy as well, and the port will establish a strong economic business hub in the north of the country, opening up more job opportunities for Maldivians with introduction of new sectors.

In addition, the council noted that Ihavandhippolhu is naturally formed with a large number of islands in the atoll, and that the island from Huvanhandhoo to Innafinolhu is one of the best places to carry out such a project.
