The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has claimed the presidency of the three northern atoll councils, in the recent Local Council Elections. Candidates representing MDP won the presidency bids in the atolls of Haa Dhaal, Haa Alif, and Shaviyani.
The MDP candidate for HA atoll council’s president, Nishan Moosa Shafeeq claimed the seat after contesting against a PPM candidate and winning with 50.27% of the total votes.
 The MDP candidate for H Dh atoll council’s president, Mohamed Siraj claimed the seat after contesting against three other candidates. One PPM and two independent candidates. Siraj won after receiving 45.29% of the total votes.
The MDP candidate for HA atoll council’s president, Mohamed Shiyam claimed the seat after contesting against a PPM candidate and winning with 50.72% of the total votes.
This has been noted as a major victory for the ruling party.
