Ministry of Economic Development has opened for bids to enhance Hanimaadhoo International Airport to a place where service will be provided to 1.3 million passengers.
The news report which was proclaimed today by the Ministry of Economic Development states that the Hanimaadhoo International Airport development project bids first phase, step one which is prequalifying the contractors has been announced yesterday by the Indian export-import bank.
It has been decided that this project would be financed by Indians Axim banks loan. They stated that under this project, a 2460 (two thousand four hundred and sixty) meter new runway and a 111,000 (one hundred and eleven thousand) square feet modern terminal will be built.
“Items required for international flights will be developed including a 624,000 (six hundred and twenty-four thousand) square feet apron. Airbus A320 which is used in international aviation and Boeing 37 aircraft boats will be available when the project is completed.”
Was stated in the news report by the ministry.
Furthermore, direct flights departing from the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Africa will be made possible. The terminal was designed based on a Maldivian theme and it exhibits a ray that lives in the ocean of Maldives. Also, it is estimated that 1.3 million passengers per year will be provided with service. Developing the Hanimaadhoo airport is an important part of President Mr.Ibrahim Mohamed Salih’s project under the thought of developing an economic hub in the north of Maldives.
Hence this project has an important role in developing resorts, city hotels and to increase guest houses, and enhancing the tourism industry. Also, it will be made possible not to depend on Male’ area and to pack and export yellowfin tuna directly from Hanimaadhoo.
Other than this different sectors will be developed and this project will play a huge role in enhancing the north economy. Also in the 3rd quarter of this year, the actual works of the project will be started.
President Mr.Ibrahim Mohamed Salih pledged to make Hanimaadhoo airport into a truly modern international airport during his campaign.
The domestic airport of Hanimaadhoo was developed and opened on the 28th of October in 1990 in the presidency of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. After that, it was changed to an international airport on 2nd February in 2013 in the presidency of former president Waheed.
