Honorable President Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in his third presidential address at the inaugural session of the People Majlis2021, stated that the government intends to ensure that the benefits of tourism are felt throughout the country from north to south.
As mentioned that the situation of the country has changed significantly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the tourism sector has had a bad impact. As a way to grow the industry, land on different islands was tendered at the end of last year to build additional tourist hotels and guest houses.
In addition, the honorable president stated that resorts would be able to sub-lease their villas and rooms for longer durations with new changes to the law.
“with new amendments to the law, resorts will be able to sublease their villas and rooms for longer durations. This new initiative will result in the diversification of our tourism sector. In addition, we estimate that 18 resorts will open this year with a capacity of 5,062 beds. In addition, the President mentioned that capacity building is necessary for the expansion of our economic activities to continue. He said that the training programs have already begun, targeting a minimum of 1,200 youth. Meanwhile ongoing program will concentrate on educating the youth, specializing in the tourism sector and related fields such as construction and ICT.
The Maldives has been one of the worst hit economies due to Covid-19. The Maldivian economy is primarily based on tourism and tourism-related sectors.
