In order to connect the islands of the Maldives, a High-Speed ferry system is to be established and the project is to be given to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) according to the decision taken by the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
During the cabinet meeting held yesterday, after a paper that was put up by the Ministry of National Planning Housing & Infrastructure, the decision to give the project to MTCC was done after consulting with the cabinet.
Integrated National Public Ferry Network is to be introduced to the Maldives to unite the islands that are being scattered all around the Maldives. The main purpose of this network is to establish a way to all the islanders to use sea transport much more efficiently.
The network is also the plan under National Special Plan (2020-2040) which included 3 zones and 6 regions that needs to be connected successfully. Under the network, 6 regions will be interconnected thoroughly, and inter connection between regions will be established as well. The ferry system will include a commute link, a non commute link and a high way link as well.
Commute link will include inter island connection in one region. While non commute link would include trips between two islands which are long. High way link establishes a connection between two regions.
The second part of the Integrated National Public Ferry Network is to connect the islands with the nearest cargo hub, as per the plans laid out by the government.
