After a brief long time since the previous government, “Kalhuvakaru” mosque has been opened today.

The mosque, believed to be 200 years or older, has been rebuilt again.

In the brief history of the Maldives, a mosque that has been moved about the most times, got re-opened by the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih today. In this ceremony, the President of the People’s Majilis Mohamed Nasheed and the Vice President Faisal Naseem also participated.

Kalhuvakaru mosque was rebuilt and named a part of the National Museum and as a living heritage as well.

During the previous government, the mosque was situated in the corner of Lily Magu and they decided to move the mosque to build an Ice skate rink on 2016. The government decided to rebuild the mosque in G.Dh Thinadhoo but later on decided to build in Hulhumale’ as well. But during the reign of the previous government, nothing was done to the mosque.

The mosque is now opened near to the National Museum in Chaandhanee Magu. During the government of ex president, Mr. Ibrahim Nasir, the mosque was also up for bid and was kept in Furanafushi as well.

After that, the mosque was brought back during the reign of President Maumoom Abdul Gayoom in 1980, back to Male’. Then, it was built in the previous position in Sultan Park.
