Baarashu council has been found guilty of deforesting palm trees and other variations of trees. Due to the offense, the council has been fined by a hefty amount of 191,250 ruffiyaa.

A news bulleting by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that, within the green belt area and from other areas of the island, variations of trees and palm trees has been cut down illegally and due to this, the islands council has been found guilty and are being charged with a fine.

The amount that has been stated above is the fine and EPA has asked the council to pay the due amount within 30 days from today.

Further from the news bulletin by EPA, it stated that the law which ensures the environment protection of the Maldives and to get the fined amounts if violated are being referred to when making this decision.

Last year on the month of October, 600 trees that were being cut from Baarah was surfaced. Due to this problem, in a news conference held by both EPA and Environment Ministry, State minister Dr.Abdullah Naseer has stated that the 600 trees that were being cut from Baarah was cut legally for water and waste management.

He also stated that, for the waste management, EPA has already given the green flag to cut the 600 trees then.
