H.Dh Makunudhoo lies in the westernmost region of Maldives, secluded from the rest of the islands within H.Dh atoll administration. Geographically, the island is within a ring that resembles an entire atoll. For this reason, the island is also dubbed “Maa Makunudhoo”.
On Independence day, Mohamed Wasif, a local from the island of Makunudhoo presented a breathtaking video of the island as a celebratory greeting. The stunning video that showed two boys running across the large span of Makunudhoo’s pristine beach with the Maldivian flag, paired with patriotic music captured the attention of many viewers all over the country.
Mohamed Wasif, who works as a leading teacher at Makunudhoo School, has been doing his own share of work to promote the beauty of the spectacular island. The YouTube channel, Instagram and Facebook page under the name “Vasiphotos” shows Wasif’s splendid photo/videography and Makunudhoo’s picturesque beauty.

Wasif has been making videos and taking pictures of islands belonging to the atoll of Haa Dhaal as a hobby.
“Even though Makunudhoo is secluded from the rest of the country, I want the world to feel a close proximity with the island through the videos and pictures I present,”
states Wasif, while describing his passion.
Makunudhoo is an island tied to the history of Maldives with many arresting tales about historical figures and events linked to the island. The island is also famous for its reef that has wrecked many ships over the years. The most famous wreck was that of the English spice ship Hayston in July 1891.
