Maafaru International Airport on Maafaru island of Noonu atoll is slated to be opened on the 1st of December, and will operate international flights.

The airport financed with the grant aid of USD 60 million from the United Arab Emirates’s (UAE) Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, is to be managed and maintained by the national carrier Maldivian.

With a state of the art terminal and a VIP lounge, the airport has a 2,200 meters long, 40 meters wide runway. The airport was developed by a Singapore company.

“When this airport opens, this region will become the most valuable in Maldives tourism,” said Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer after completing the first test flight to the airport. The atoll is home to resorts such as Velaa Private Island, Soneva Jani and Cheval Blanc Randheli.

The airport was opened by then President Abdulla Yamin Gayyoom during his presidential campaign.
