The Local Government Authority (LGA) has decided to suspend Mohamed Waheed, the President of the Haa Alifu Hoarafushi Council, for three months without pay, and to advise the other councilors of the council.
According to a statement released by the LGA, the decision to suspend Waheed was made after considering the severity of the issues. This followed an inquiry into a total of eight cases related to complaints submitted to the LGA. The LGA stated that Waheed was suspended because, despite being entrusted with the primary responsibility of running the council in accordance with laws and regulations, he was found to have violated the Decentralization Act governing the administration of decentralized areas.
Some of the issues investigated by the LGA include:
* Hoarafushi Council spending funds in violation of the Public Finance Regulation during the organization of this year’s Thilauthuru Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
* Hoarafushi Council purchasing date palm trees in 2023 to be planted in the island’s harbor area, in violation of the Public Finance Regulation.
* Adding adjacent vacant plots of land to existing residential plots, in violation of the Land Use Plan.
* The Council spending funds in violation of the Public Finance Regulation for Eid al-Adha sports, stage lighting, and stage arrangements in the year 1446 AH.
* The issue of Hoarafushi Council failing to provide information requested under the Right to Information Act.
The LGA stated that the council will be instructed to act on the advice given in the inquiry report regarding the specific issues identified. Furthermore, the LGA has decided that if any negligence is found on the part of the Council’s Secretary General or any other administrative staff, the matter will be submitted to the relevant state authorities to take action against the responsible employee.
The LGA has previously suspended councilors and council presidents and taken action against them for legal and administrative issues.
