The State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced that it installed 44 gensets and added a total of 23.9 megawatts (MW) of electricity capacity across the Maldives over the last two years.

According to STELCO, the gensets were installed in 29 islands under its service network, significantly boosting power capacity and easing electricity shortages faced by local communities. The company said these upgrades will help ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply.

Breaking down the work carried out across regions:

  • North Ari Atoll:
Eleven gensets were installed across seven islands, eight of which were brand new. These installations added 5.4 MW of capacity.

  • South Ari Atoll:
Thirteen gensets were installed in eight islands, including six new units. This resulted in an additional 3.7 MW of capacity.

  • Malé Atoll:
Fifteen gensets were installed across nine islands, twelve of which were newly purchased. This contributed 12.8 MW of capacity.

STELCO stated that these projects reflect the company’s commitment to strengthening sustainable, reliable, and nationwide electricity services.
