Ooredoo Maldives CEO and Managing Director Khalid Al Hamadi says the ‘Dhivar’ project, Google’s new subsea cable system being laid across the Indian Ocean, will open major opportunities for the Maldives and accelerate the country’s digital evolution.

In Google’s official announcement of the project, Khalid Al Hamadi said Ooredoo is “deeply honored” to take part in this historic initiative to establish a new connectivity hub in the Maldives.

Sharing his delight in partnering with Google, he described the Dhivar cable system as a vital milestone that will strengthen the nation’s core digital infrastructure and lay the foundation for the second phase of digital transformation in the Maldives.

He highlighted that Ooredoo Maldives, as a leading digital service provider, continues to expand world-class connectivity and digital services throughout the country.

Khalid Al Hamadi added that this development will create new opportunities for businesses , especially in the tourism sector , enabling greater modernization, improved customer experiences, and enhanced avenues for global expansion.

He stated that Ooredoo is proud to support and drive the next chapter of “Digital Maldives.”

Google’s Dhivar project will connect the Maldives, Christmas Island, and Oman, marking a significant investment to boost digital connectivity, reliability, and resilience across the Indian Ocean region.

The name “Dhivar” refers to the rope used to control the large sail of traditional Maldivian dhonis, symbolizing the skill, strength, and seamanship of Maldivian sailors.
