The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced a series of major development projects across Laamu Atoll, including the Maavah Harbor Development Project and the Causeway Construction Project connecting Hithadhoo and Kunahhandhoo.
The projects were officially awarded to MTCC during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to Laamu Atoll, through special signing and inauguration ceremonies held in Maavah, Hithadhoo, and Kunahhandhoo.
The Maavah Harbor Development Project agreement was signed between Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdullah Muttalib and MTCC Managing Director, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired) Ahmed Saudi.
Under the project scope, MTCC will dredge 38,900 cubic meters of harbor and channel area, repair 445 meters of existing quay wall, and construct an 11-meter-long and 11-meter-wide ramp covering 121 square meters. The project also includes building a 226-meter concrete jetty, developing 2,298 square meters of pavement, and installing harbor lighting systems.
Valued at MVR 23.46 million, the harbor development project is expected to be completed within 300 days.
Meanwhile, Minister Dr. Abdullah Muttalib also inaugurated the Hithadhoo–Kunahhandhoo Causeway Project, a transformative infrastructure initiative valued at MVR 81.22 million.
The project entails constructing a 210-meter causeway linking Kunahhandhoo and Mendhoo, and a 75-meter causeway connecting Mendhoo and Hithadhoo, with a 7.8-meter-wide driving lane. Revetment works will also be carried out along a 390-meter stretch to protect the structure from erosion and wave impact.
The project is scheduled for completion within 500 days.
In addition, MTCC has commenced coastal protection works in Maavah and initiated the reclamation of 15 hectares of new land. The company has also begun work on modernizing island roads, constructing a Waste Management Center, and building a Police Station as part of the island’s broader infrastructure development plan.
According to MTCC, the new causeway will significantly improve inter-island connectivity, offering residents a safer and more reliable link during adverse weather conditions. The company stated that the project is expected to bring long-term social and economic benefits to the communities of Laamu Atoll.
