The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has designated five regions in the Maldives as special zones for mariculture development.
These zones include Ha. Atoll, R. Atoll, K. Atoll, M. Atoll, and Th. Atoll, to strengthen the country’s mariculture industry and create new economic opportunities.
To attract investment, the government is offering several incentives for mariculture projects in these areas. These include waiving acquisition costs and providing a three-year rent exemption for investors operating within the designated zones.
In addition to supporting investment, the government is also focusing on building local expertise. So far, 29 individuals from 19 different atolls have completed basic training in mariculture practices under newly launched human resource development programs.
To raise awareness among young people, educational sessions have been conducted in schools, reaching 142 students. These programs aim to spark interest in mariculture and showcase potential career paths in the industry.
This initiative represents a major step in the government’s broader strategy to diversify the marine-based economy and promote sustainable employment across the atolls.
