The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) announced today that weather conditions are expected to worsen across different parts of the country over the next 5 days due to an anticipated strengthening of the southwest monsoon.
According to a statement released by the Met Office, from tomorrow until May 31st, several atolls in the northern and central regions will experience strong winds, rough seas, and potential storm surges. The statement also highlighted the possibility of rain and thunderstorms in some islands across these regions.
In light of the expected adverse weather conditions, the Met Office has urged all parties, particularly seafarers, to obtain the latest weather updates before embarking on any journeys. This precautionary measure is aimed at ensuring public safety during this period of unstable weather.
Notably, the southwest monsoon has now commenced across all regions of the Maldives. The southern atolls first experienced the onset of the monsoon on May 7th, followed by the central atolls on May 12th. Most recently, the northern atolls entered the monsoon season last Wednesday.
The Met Office has emphasized the importance of public vigilance during this period, urging citizens to pay close attention to weather advisories and implement necessary safety measures. They have specifically requested the public to follow all guidelines issued by the office regarding weather changes.
