Country’s first Air Ambulance has made its first flight to Kulhudhuffushi City’s Airport.

The air ambulance service will be provided in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Island Aviation and NSPA.

On Air Ambulance’s first trip, it reached Kulhudhuffushi Saturday early morning to transfer a critical patient from Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH). The air ambulance service is provided using a dedicated DHC-8-200 aircraft for the purpose.

The service of air ambulance will be available round-the-clock in case of emergencies.

According to the Ministry of Health, the air ambulance will carry patients to the nearest tertiary hospital in the country where treatment is available from all parts of the country in case of emergencies. The air ambulance will also have 15 trained healthcare workers and facilities. These include doctors, nurses and emergency medical technicians.

While the  air ambulance service started on March 1,  currently only two patients will be carried on the aircraft at once. However, as the service expands, the number will be increased, according to Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel.

Moreover, the government aims to take patients abroad in air ambulances as well in near future. In this regard discussions have been held with neighbouring Sri Lanka, where the government has decided to allow flights to fly within two hours in case of emergencies.
