As part of Ooredoo Maldives efforts to connect International Peace Cable to Maldives, Peace cable has been connected to Ooredoo’s landing site in Kulhudhuffushi City.
This is for the first time that an international submarine cable has been connected to any island other than Hulhumale’. Ooredoo stated that the system is expected to work in the third quarter of this year.
Minister for Cities Adam Shareef presided over the ceremony to connect the cable to the landing site.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Adam Shareef stated that it was an honour for the city and the country as a whole that the peace cable connecting the Maldives to Singapore and Europe is built at Kulhudhuffushi. I am confident that the initiative will benefit the society more and open more doors, he added.
Moreover, the Minister noted that Ooredoo has been making significant efforts to develop the Maldives by introducing a number of services in a competitive environment.
Chief Commercial Officer of Ooredoo Maldives Hussain Niyaz stated that with this initiative, Kulhudhuffushi and the entire country will be benefited and the services provided by Ooredoo will be improved. Niyaz also noted that Kulhudhuffushi City would be named on the world’s submarine cable maps.
Furthermore, Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif thanked Ooredoo Maldives for choosing the city to host the landing station of the new international submarine cable. He expressed hope that Kulhudhuffushi City would become a major digital hub and the community and the people of the Maldives would benefit more with Ooredoo’s initiative.
The international submarine cable will also connect the country to Singapore, Europe and Africa. Ooredoo plans to invest in this submarine cable to improve the latency of internet services and increase capacity. With this cable, Ooredoo will be able to enhance 5G capabilities, open up opportunities for innovative services and create a real digital Maldives.
