The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has decided to build a Multipurpose Laboratory in Fuvahmulah, initially planned to be build at HDh. Hanimaadhoo, due to lack of support from the island council.
In a letter sent to Hanimaadhoo council, the ministry stated that due to the council’s decision to take a large portion of the land area of the agriculture centre operating in Hanimaadhoo, the construction of the multipurpose laboratory to be set up at the centre has been delayed.
According to the letter, the Ministry was working to set up the laboratory as part of the ‘The Project for Developing Sustainable Agriculture Economy’ project, which is being implemented by the Ministry through UNDP under a grant from the Government of Japan.
The letter further stated that the ministry has decided to set up the laboratory in Fuvahmulah as the discussions held with the Hanimaadhoo Council under the leadership of the Ministry to provide land for the construction of the laboratory have not yielded the desired results.
Speaking regarding the issue, President of Hanimaadhoo Council Abdul Sattar Hassan stated that the ministry had requested to build a multipurpose laboratory in Hanimaadhoo, and the ministry’s intention was to do so on the land south of Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Center. It’s a very large area of land that’s about two lakh square feet in size.
Moreover, he stated that the ministry did not provide adequate information about the laboratory to the council, but for one-and-a-half years, the council did nothing on the land to allow the work. However, no work was done there during the period and the council provided the land to the farmers and started farming only after that.
Sattar added that 200,000 square feet of land was not required for the construction of the laboratory and there was enough space available on the existing land at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre to construct the laboratory. He also stated the ministry had not request for addittional land for the project in Hanimaadhoo, and that they do not accept irresponsible excuses to relocate the laboratory to be set up in Hanimaadhoo.
