17 positive cases of filariasis had been identified in Kulhudhuffushi City in a health screening program held for migrant workers.

The program, which was held from December 1 to 2, was one of the events held to mark World AIDS Day. Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that 17 expatriates screened during the program had tested positive for filariasis and had arrived in the Maldives after living in areas where filariasis is already endemic.

Based on the HPA’s recommendation, Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH) has screened the expatriates and has arranged for further testing and treatment if they have the disease. Moreover, HPA stated that they are in discussions with the World Health Organization (WHO) on further measures to be taken in the wake of these cases.

Filariasis is a disease caused by a chronic mosquito-borne parasitic infection.Filariasis is usually caused by a mosquito species called ‘culex’. The mosquito breeds in water that is generally contaminated and polluted.

There are chances of people not showing symptoms outside for several days after filariasis, but after a long period of time, patients may have episodes of acute inflammation of lymphatic vessels (lymphangitis) along with high temperatures, shaking chills, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
