PPM/PNC’s presidential candidate Dr. Muizzu has pledged to create a reliable, quality retirement home for seniors who may not have the means or family support to stay at home.

Dr. Muizzu addressed this matter during the “Ask Muizzu” program in response to a concerned senior citizen. The individual expressed a desire for companionship and social interaction with peers, while also raising the concern of care for elderly individuals in times of frailty and vulnerability.

Dr. Muizzu emphasized the significance of senior citizens within society, highlighting a current lack of tailored policies for their support. He noted the rarity of old age homes in Maldives. Dr. Muizzu assured that, under his leadership, a dedicated facility will be established to provide professional care and assistance to senior citizens, considering it a positive step for society as a whole.

“Old age homes are not prevalent in the Maldives. During my tenure, I am committed to establishing a professionally managed facility for senior citizens, ensuring their proper care. Creating a secure space for elderly individuals without suitable home care is imperative. This endeavor will provide them with an opportunity to reunite with their loved ones and foster meaningful connections.” – Dr. Muizzu

Dr. Muizzu underscored that this decision stemmed from extensive deliberations and diverse perspectives, emphasizing its crucial importance for Maldives. He stated that careful research will inform its implementation. Dr. Muizzu also expressed confidence that, with the grace of Allah, this endeavor will be initiated as a pilot project.

At present, senior citizens in need of care in Maldives are often placed in the special needs institution in K. Guraidhoo. However, this arrangement is not suitable for them, leading to both emotional and psychological distress. Establishing a dedicated old age home would offer significant relief to the elderly population in Maldives.
