Ha. Ihavandhoo constituency parliament member Mohamed Shifau has submitted a letter to the Parliament to explain the reasons for the delay in the construction of the fish procuring Centre to be set up by the government in Ha. Ihavandhoo.
The government has decided to set up a fish procuring Centre in Ihavandhoo, one of the most extensive fishing islands in the north of the country, and has also allocated funds for the project. On December 29, 2022, the 82nd general meeting of the 4th session of Ihavandhoo Council approved the allotment of the one hector land free of cost on request of the government.
However, since the as the project has not started yet, MP Shifau submitted a letter to the Parliament to explain why the work is being delayed and how long the fishermen in the north have to wait for project to be completed.
In his letter, Shifau stated that the last three years have been the highest number of fish being caught and fish procures in the country’s history. Shifau also pointed out that statistics show the number of fishing is growing in the Maldives and the number of fish caught is increasing month by month.
In addition, he stated that there has to be an early solution, by given time and circumstances. He also stressed on the need to clear the way for fishermen to earn their income and save the investments made by the owners of vessels by taking loans.
